Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out to us!

When are applications accepted?

The Local Union 441 dispatcher is always in contact with our contractors. Once there is a demand for apprentices, we open the application process in your zone.

What kind of testing will I go through?

The first test is an online Journey Assessment. You will have 30 multiple-choice questions. These are common-sense questions about work ethics on the job.

The second is an online Math Assessment. You will have 30 multiple-choice questions. These cover basic math equations, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, fractions, and measurements on a ruler.

How long do I have to take the test?

There is no set time limit for either test; however, we do stop you at 2 hours. Most applicants are finished within an hour.

What is the minimum age to apply?

You must be at least 18 years old to apply.

What type of driver’s license is required?

A regular Class C driver's license is required. If you have a restricted license, you will need to bring a letter showing it is restricted, and you must also have a valid photo state ID. A driver’s license ensures you can be covered by insurance.

How much does the Apprenticeship Program cost?

The only yearly school cost for an apprentice is an enrollment fee of approximately $600.00. Please note that your Local Union 441 fees are separate and do not go through the training department.

When does school start?

School normally starts in August.

Where will I go to school?

In-class apprentice training is held Monday through Thursday (adjusting for holiday weeks) from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. This takes place at our main location, 4646 W. Kellogg, Wichita, KS 67209.

How will I know my schedule?

You will receive your scheduled classes on your first day of school. However, you will be sent a school calendar with your group number so you will know when to attend.

What if I am from out of town?

All out-of-town students will drive to the school address on Monday morning. School on Monday starts at 8:00 am for every student to allow extra driving time.

What does out-of-town apprentice mean?

An out-of-town apprentice is one who lives 61 miles or more from the school address based on the address you have on file. As an out-of-town student, you will be placed in a hotel for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night (2 students per room). Check-in will be Monday after school, and check-out will be Thursday morning before school. You are also eligible to receive per diem for the week if all required documentation is turned in.

What if I need more information about my apprenticeship?

Each year, PPATKS will notify (by mail) all first-years entering the program to attend a “bootcamp” day. This day is very important, as you will receive your schedule, invoice, and entry into the school. Don’t worry! We know there is a lot of information to know.
